tossed salad recipe

The title ‘tossed salad recipe’ is not really true as tossed involves the process of making the salad and not a recipe as such.

Nevertheless, it’s a common way of referring to a mixture of lettuce, veggies and a vinaigrette or dressing and tossing the whole thing together lightly. It’s fast and easy.

Of course you’ll find many variations depending on the ingredients added to the lettuce. These would be most likely spinach, romaine, baby salad greens, carrot, celery, onion, tomatoes, etc.

I often just use a bag of baby greens, washed and dried, and then add some cherry tomatoes, coriander, mixed salad spices, olive oil and balsamic vinegar and toss lightly. Delicious!

Here are 2 similar tossed salad recipes. You’ll see it’s really up to your taste what you add to it.

Tossed Salad with vinaigrette

  • torn spinach leaves
  • torn romaine lettuce
  • torn green or red leaf lettuce
  • chopped tomatoes
  • chopped green bell pepper
  • peeled, seeded, and chopped cucumber
  • sliced red onion
  • 1 small onion sliced
  • 1/3 cup (75 mL) balsamic vinegar
  • 3/4 cup (175 mL) extra-virgin olive oil
  • 1 tbsp (15 mL) lemon juice
  • 1 tsp (5 mL) dijon mustard
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • salt and pepper to taste

Directions

Combine first 8 ingredients together in a salad bowl.

In a separate small bowl, whisk together oil, vinegar, lemon juice, mustard, garlic, salt and pepper. Pour over the salad and gently toss.

I prefer to use the vinaigrette right away instead of refrigerating, as the taste is different.
